New Year’s 2012 Vintage Prom @ NVA

The Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world in 2012, but that seemed like the last thing on the minds of those celebrating at the 2012 Vintage Prom at New Village Arts Theatre’s New Year’s Celebration.

The lobby of New Village Arts Theatre was transformed by newly appointed event coordinator and Foundry manager Jenna Carlson. Guests dressed in vintage attire (era of their choice) parted the shiny golden plastic strips that hung along the perimeter windows and entered the throw back celebration.

Hap’s Bar animated with toasts. Complimentary photos by KomPhotos Imagery captured each guest in vintage prom poses. A long table laden with snacks and treats was frequented throughout the night and the theatre stage lured with the sounds of an old school dance party.

The night’s focus later shifted from the bar, food and photo setup to the theatre stage where guests danced to vintage and contemporary tunes amongst a sea of balloons. An animated backdrop counted down the year culminating in an explosion of confetti and optimism.

2012 holds high hopes and possibilities though the Mayan’s think otherwise. The party at the New Village Arts Theatre ignored the Mayan predictions and not only celebrated the past… but welcomed whatever the future has to offer.

PROJECT: Plant an Ornament 2011 Crafters

Hot glue guns rotated around the craft laden tables while food, drink, live music and holiday cheer was enjoyed during the 4th annnual PROJECT: Plant an Ornament craft night hosted by the New Village Arts Theatre Foundry on  December 18th.

What began 4 years ago with a few friends huddled around a small coffee table full of supplies in the living room of the Artpartment, has grown into an annual event enjoyed by more than 50 crafters and community enthusiasts.

Live music by local favorite duo Sprout Farm inspired creativity and whimsical craft. Pizza and refreshments were on hand and over 100 ornaments were transformed into brightly crafted masterpieces.

Each craft will be hung in the Village for Christmas morning as a way to encourage the development of a more creative culture in the Carlsbad Village, as well as to promote local business and encourage urban exploration.

‘Fall into December’ Art Show: Cardiff

Backed up ’til January

As soon as your last pile of leftover turkey dwindles to an empty plate, the Christmas season arrives. Green is accompanied by its contrasting companion of red and the scent of evening fires tumble from neighborhood chimneys. Blinking lights radiate with holiday excitement and plastic bags plump with thoughtful gifts stash in secret hiding spots.

Christmas is in full effect, which means along with all the excitement, comes congestion. Everyday schedules are flooded with holiday responsibilities. Parties scatter the month of December like ornaments on a decorated fir. The roads creep the pace of a melting snowman and a chore unrelated to Christmas becomes January’s responsibility.

How do you feel the strains of the holidays?

Making Waves at the Kook’s Cafe in Cardiff

It’s not a surprise that many view the coastal communities of North County as conservative in terms of supporting creative thought and artistic expression. There might be more blank walls than murals and an art show sprouts up as often as a North County downpour drops, but the pockets of creativity that do exist make large waves.

Encinitas has a colorful history of creativity. Richard Margolin began his fascination for art and installation in Encinitas. His brightly decorated house laden with rock n roll references has been showcased in numerous newspaper and magazine articles, as well as in a book. The infamous Surfing Madonna created by Mark Patterson and installed under the bridge near the intersection of Encinitas Blvd. and the 101 continues to gain national attention.

Though the Surfing Madonna may rival for making the biggest waves in the art community of Encinitas, the once hated and now beloved Cardiff Kook takes the cake for longevity. Installed in 2007, it was first criticized for its unnatural surfing pose. Today, accompanied by it numerous costumes and installations, it continues to be a driving force in establishing Cardiff as one of the coastal communities at the forefront of North County art.

Kevin Anderson, artist and Encinitas resident of over 30 years, asked to paint the highly visible wall of the recently opened Kook’s Cafe. Anderson, a Cardiff resident artist, received numerous honks from passing cars, often accompanied by drivers greeting Kevin on a first name basis.

The Cardiff Kook has been used as a public canvas where installations have included Oprah Winfrey, a Kook gulping shark, giant prehistoric scenery and Van Gogh. A creative community and the development of a more artistic culture have resulted from this local love for public art and the many projects it has inspired.

Bags of Creativity

Carlsbadcrawl.com, a site dedicated to encouraging the development of a more artistic culture within the local streets of the Carlsbad Village, began just over 5 years ago with a simple photo of the sunset taken from the intersection of Magnolia and Highland. A brief description accompanied the photo announcing the site’s goal.

The logo of the dandelion soon followed which represents a single thought. Much like a single dandelion in a carefully manicured garden, a single thought makes a subtle impact on its surroundings. It is rarely noticed and eventually uprooted and forgotten.

When a dandelion spreads it seeds in a garden and multiple dandelions blossom, their impact is greater and harder to ignore. At this point a conservative garden shifts to a more organic and unrestricted natural growth.

If one dandelion represents a creative thought, then a chain of dandelions represents multiple creative thoughts, a network of mindsthe development of a creative culture!

Each additional mind to the developing artistic culture in the Carlsbad Village brings along its talents, its ambitions and  its bag of creativity.

Street Artists of all Ages

The popularity of placing art in the streets with no immediate chance for sale has surged in the last 5 years. Art which once was created for galleries or commissions are now being showcased in urban atmospheres. The goal is to transfer an idea to the passerby, to ignite an artistic thought and to introduce creativity into a community.

The increased popularity in this strengthening art movement has trickled down to all ages with kids now realizing the potential of the urban canvas.

The Carlsbad Toreador by SNYDER

Some regard the bullfight as a tradition just as culturally important as other forms of art including painting, dance and music.

Whether it is a violent dance with a bull or a beautifully balanced canvas, the development of culture is important for any community. It brings people together and unifies similar thought. It creates interest within the local neighborhood and it provides entertainment for visitors.

Snyder combines the deadly dance of the bullfight with the act of painting and the variable of weather in his latest public art installation implemented in the streets of Carlsbad, CA.
