UPDATE:Weeded

During one of my many strolls through the village, I stumbled upon a scar which at one time was an illegible scribble of a name, a location or a neurotic rant. Nevertheless, it was someone’s idea. Unlike the many dark closets that hoard artistic expression, this tree represented a public forum which showcased an idea for all to see and question. Why was this tree chosen? Why was red paint used? What did the scribble say and what relevance did it have to Carlsbad…to you? tree.jpgThese stimulating questions no longer are asked because of the “weeding” of a this former public display. The bright red design, which at one time contrasted angrily with its surrounding green shrub, was hacked out of the palm leaving a visual scar, which instead of stimulating a creative evaluation, represents an obstruction of the growth of culture. As I pass this blemish, I question the reason for this alteration. Obviously someone felt a certain image was damaged like an unwanted weed in a perfectly groomed garden or a stubborn strand of hair in a tightly woven bun. Its all relative to the viewer and the creator. One location might be perfect compared to another which might be unwilling to protect one’s image and thought. Red scribble, framed by bright green was displayed for enough time to intrigue at least one mind, which then serves an important purpose and elevates it to a successful piece of art.

Which one do you prefer, the red scribble or the bland blemish?
