At this time Carlsbadcrawl is closing PROJECT:Plant an Egg 2008 and revealing the entire painting. This inaugural project has created a great interest within our community and we thank all the participants.Though the entire puzzle was never revealed by the logging of found eggs, we are extremely happy with the involvement by those who participated and by those who remained interested.
FOUND EGGS: 60 FOUND AND LOGGED EGGS: 22/60 (37%)
Above is a video that documented the development of the painting which later became Plant an Egg’s puzzle.
A table as bright and cluttered as the surrounding walls came to life with the animated smiles and chatter of local artists during Carlsbadcrawl’s inaugural Plant an Egg decorating gathering at the ARTpartment.
Paint smeared and googley eyes were glued as each of the 60 eggs slowly came to life. Each egg expressed its creator’s personality. Some wild with charisma and others introverted with thought. Some eggs were belted out with spontaneous expression while others delicately grew with precise lines and meticulously arranged strands of yarn. Soundless spurts of creativity were broken by outbursts of laughter as each egg was finished. A box in the room’s far corner became cluttered with colorful eggs and the center table and carpet filled with glitter and feathers. Each egg sat nervous knowing a dark bush or a bricked cave could be their next home.
A collective can be defined as a number of people acting as a group. Project: Plant an egg gave us an excuse to come together with the intent to create and share ideas.
Everyone here at Carlsbadcrawl would like to thank all the participants in our inaugural Plant an Egg project. There has been an extremely positive response from both the artists and the egg hunters. Locals and tourists both explored the streets finding eggs and possibly other treasures they had once overlooked.
This project not only brought our community together, but also left an everlasting impression on those visiting. Check out the below comment from a kind vacationing family!
“We were on vacation this past weekend and had risen early for breakfast. After eating, we decided to take a walk. Our 8 year old son stated that he had seen an egg in both the median of the road and on the steps at the Ocean House restaurant. We hadn’t heard of the project, but were delighted that he found the first two eggs. He and our daughter searched the streets as we continued to stroll along and found the others. They collected 8 eggs in all and found more, but wanted to save the fun for others, so they left the additional found eggs in place. Both children plan on keeping the eggs as a reminder of a delightful vacation. The children have kept the stickers as well. We have checked daily to read the postings and to view the painting. This was an excellent surprise and a great event for the village. We are from Huntington Beach California.
If you would like to send the shirts, we would be very proud to wear them. You have a fantastic, creative community!”
Thanks Swansons from us at Carlsbadcrawl.
UPDATE: Many eggs have been found but not yet logged. We can only hope that they are safe and waiting to be logged rather than lost or tossed away. We will have to wait and see. Thanks for all who logged promptly. As of right now, there are still 4 eggs in the streets waiting to be found.
CLUES: One sits tired, hungry and haggard while his last cigarette burns waiting for spare change as ocean soaked kids impatiently wait to purchase hot dogs and Slurpees. Another strums songs of a long life while fellow long-haired hoodlums spend their last dollars on new tunes. Another stands tall like a fluffy cloud and looks down towards a window full of dusty paperbacks and a hairy legged critter squats a vacant balcony of a once happening surf shack.

The sun dipped its sleepy eyes through the clouds just long enough to get a piece of Joe’s waling guitar solos, Loren’s growling vocals and the thumping rolls of Sean’s double base, before hiding again behind teasing clouds. The wind whipped hair that was too tired to headbang while others frenzied over the power of pure metal. Loud roars of a hog could be heard down the highway as NIHILIST ripped through a variety of crowd favorite originals, classic covers (Megadeth/Judiest Priest/Old Metallica) and a handful of their newer stuff at the San Diego Harley Davidson Dealership.
All types of bikers from the weekend warrior to the open road free spirited wander feasted on hamburgers and hot dogs while metal blasted from the deep red painted stage. Dozens of bikes lined the parking lot, each representing values of the individual rider. Matte finished black bikes with chrome spikes prowled low to the ground and others parked laden with dressings. Brightly colored flames sizzled and long handles bars amazed. A biker’s personality could be seen in their ride and their interests described in their paint jobs, jackets and stickers.
Streams of dark blue jeans and black t shirts filtered in and out of the dealership, all pausing with admiration of NIHILIST and the sounds of music that first caused their hair to grow long. Future rockers threw horns and encouraging parents watched. Metal heads studied riffs and passing cars stopped.
As the gig wrapped up and the bikes roared to life, the ears of San Diego rang with the sounds of ass kicking metal…NIHILIST KILLS!!!

What would your egg look like and what would it hide within? Where would you put it?
this is just an early preparation stage for a larger project. More details to come in the near future…
The early sun stares at me as I crawl along the 78. Motorist swerve and brows dip. A timecard awaits as a boss stands stiff in a window overlooking an empty parking lot. My eyes wander as my mind organizes the day’s tasks. Projects nag as greater ideas brew. My mind steeps in a stew of creativity, but battles the idea of throbbing florescent lights and the dry chill of an uncontrollable air-conditioner. The radio’s advertisements hound and the passenger window whistles. Today is yesterday and tomorrow is…
A rut jolts my mind as my truck safely cruises. An idea, high on the embankment, screams towards the passing commuters. My eyes attentively hear the fearful cries of an unacknowledged thought. My neck snaps and my head turns to experience the site of two large letters boldly painted high above the highway.
As the flow of traffic carries me past this early morning jewel, I pounder its meaning. Is it a mysterious acronym or a hurried abbreviation? Why was this location picked? How was it executed without attention from the constant stream of passing eyes? As I become connected with a stranger’s thoughts, I notice another RD sprayed in gray. As my head returns to its normal driving position, I spot yet another RD sprayed in black. The remaining curves and stretches shout at me with at least 20 more RD’s. Visions of hooded hoodlums leaping out of shadows enter my mind. Stereotypes are for the single minded and I picture an angry mother frantically sprinting through the dark streets of the nights spraying the initials of a son lost to war or a spiteful businessman spreading slander of a deal gone bad.
Do you have a hero, a muse or someone you look up to? Everyone has been influenced my someone else some time in their life. An early memory of a bright painting may have ignited the urge to record what you see or think through dancing images and a song might be responsible for your fascination with music. Art provokes thought, but also creates passions. We all have them and they guide us through each day. A ride on a bike may drift to see the neighborhood gallery’s newest window presentation and a long list of songs on the local jukebox may tempt another pint.
If unfamiliar with what you love, look back, dig deep and find what you loved as a child. Dig up that dusty folder of doodles which sits securely in your parent’s garage! Read you childhood journal! Watch hours of old family VHS tapes! Flip through stacks of desaturated family photos! You might find a reoccurring image, song, thought or figure which just might be your forgotten passion.
Once upon a time there was a car. His hubcaps shined like the stars above an empty desert and his paint was as smooth as an undiscovered dune. His interior was the color of a thundercloud and was as healthy as a puppy’s young coat. Short wanders through village streets occupied his time when not parked in his carpeted garage. Though few, his friends were warm and greeted him with kindness. He rarely left his community and was content with each simple and unadventurous day.
Time ticked like a dancing woman ages. Slowly, each day became less enjoyable. The high sun sagged low and his favorite streets wrinkled. Crows fallowed him and squawked insults . His horn constantly yelled obscenities and his brakes squeaked. Charisma leaked out of loose nuts and steam rose from hot hoses. He became tired, bored and ill.
Tears gathered in a thick puddle on the ground under his rusty body. His faded paint sulked and became a target for overhead birds. He cried as younger cars purred. Though still young, he felt aged beyond repair. Depression slowly defeated the urge to drive. His mind played tricks on him and his body showed the scars of mockery. Trash was hung from his antenna and his doors became cluttered with the ideas of others. He closed his eyes and fell asleep.

A weed thrives on the ability to grow without restrictions. A manicured garden has limits and bounds and is “weeded” to eliminate wild growth. An unmanicured garden, much like a forest, grows freely, wrapping around nearby trees and hanging off tall branches. Each individual plant interacts with its neighbors, ultimately creating a single entity of unrestricted growth.
Artistic ideas also thrive when allowed to grow freely. An idea becomes planted during the early stages of brainstorming. The “seed” of an idea slowly develops within the mind of an artist much like a seed germinates under rich soil. When ready, an idea sprouts and is shared for all to see, interact with and analyze.
A single idea is like a lonely weed. It stands alone, fragile and easily uprooted and forgotten. The simultaneous sprouting of many weeds has potential for longevity. Many ideas grow and when unleashed, interact in numbers and results in the development of an artistic culture.
Let your ideas grow!
• WILD GROWTH OF IDEAS
• UNMANICURED DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURE
• UNRESTRICTED EXPRESSION OF CREATIVITY

Ideas run wild during times of political elections. Whether local or national, dramatic commercials pulsate in our living rooms and brightly painted signs clutter our sidewalks. Coffee shops chatter with ill-read accusations and the internet streams media driven parodies. Our streets become a political battlefield where a persuasion is an kill and a lost vote is a casualty.
Where have you seen political expression? Anything creative?

A long row of illuminated paper bags led the way to the show titled Reinventing the Wheel by Sanctuary143. This free event, catered with snacks, beer and wine, showcased art in a mellow and relaxed atmosphere while maintaining a high level of organization and experience.
Bubbly guests and friendly artist lingered outside the brightly decorated walls of the show, listening to beats by the onsite DJ and shopping for merchandise. A large Pepper Tree drooped low and lush grass grew wild in the front courtyard which optioned as an escape from the bright lights within. Manipulated bikes waited for curious eyes while the mastermind lingered closely. Daring guest challenged the unorthodox bikes; some relying on rusty motors and others cranking pedals welded to handlebars. Small groups mingled close to the DJ while others made the rounds inside.
The bright lights within shined on paintings, installations, photography, collages and multimedia presentations. On hand artist rambled motivations while inspired guests listened. In a smaller room, hung frame-samples which presented the idea of the actual function of this location when not lined with local art.
The key to a successful show is a body of interesting work, a theme, organization, ample space and well informed promotion. The experience of Sanctuary143 was obvious and the show seemed to be a great success!
To observe, analyze and ponder, one must first learn to slow down. The act of changing location at a slower pace allows sites, which normally missed, to be observed. Ideas fluid our neighborhoods with creative expressions; all unique to the artist’s mind, but often overlooked.
A dramatic development takes place during an infants first 2 years of life. The dependent newborn turns into a sophisticated two-year-old who crawls, talks, solves problems, and manages relationships with adults and other children. A child’s mind is like a sponge during these early years of development. The mind’s one task is to learn, which it does at an amazing speed. Imagine how much more you could learn if you, like a crawling child, slowed down, eliminated stresses and opened your eyes/minds to your surroundings.
The elderly, long-lived, wise and experienced, Carlsbadcrawl through the streets of the village without responsibilities, schedules or concerns. Time is occupied by water-painting and sunny day meanders. The absence of worries allows their eyes to wander and their minds to drift. A bright flower raises wrinkles and a war is just another headline. A chirping bird transfers information clearer than the evening news. A crawl brings new sites and understandings to those once rushed.
Carlsbadcrawl-The act of wandering through the village of Carlsbad at a pace similar to that of a crawl resulting in a visual and mental analysis of your surroundings.

“The wheel has become so ingrained in our society that often the evolution of a culture is measured based on its mastery of this basic machine. However, we can pinpoint ancient, advanced civilizations with no documented use of the wheel. And with fuel prices rising, global warming looming, and suburbs expanding, we are forced to reevaluate the place this everyday object holds in our lives. Perhaps now actually is the time to reinvent the wheel.
Through art we have the unique opportunity to look at the wheel from a broader perspective, challenging its historical significance and envisioning a new life for it without a need to conquer perfection.”
A handful of days in the heart of San Francisco flooded our senses with interesting and thought-provoking observations, all unique, inspiring and foreign.
