Eggs in the Streets: 2011

One of the most enjoyable parts of each project is crawling the village streets in the early morning. The village is dark, quiet and motionless. An early morning chill tumbles down the empty paths and an early bird serenades in the distance.

Do you recognize the sound? Where?

A Brightly Crafted Easter in the Village

Easter Sunday 2011 began early for many who excitedly set out in search for brightly crafted Easter Eggs hidden in the streets of the Carlsbad Village. Kids, parents and couples were seen peeking though bushes and in tree stumps for their favorite crafted egg.

This 4th annual PROJECT: Plant an Egg 2011 is a community celebration of art and the Carlsbad Village beginning with a community gathering and egg crafting party hosted this year at Crafticality. 100 eggs were brightly crafted, given a log number and placed in the streets for the Easter Sunday morning hunt.

Each egg contained a limited edition sticker, a log number and a puzzle piece, as well as a friendly note that asked finders to “please be kind and leave some behind” for later searchers. The finders were encouraged to expose a piece of a puzzle by visiting carlsbadcrawl.com.

Oceanside residents Bianca Lara and son David Hethorn spent the majority of their Easter searching high and low for 1 of the additional “Bonus Eggs” painted in Snyder’s signature drip technique. “Davey was crazed to find a painted one. He missed one in the ivy sign by one minute,” Lara explained. Luckily her son David found the last bonus egg. “Thanks for the best hunt we’ve had in years!”

The lucky 5 bonus egg finders will get a chance to identify a “village sound” by visiting an undisclosed website and listening the the audio recording. The first to identify the sound wins a limited edition hand drawn and painted Doodle illustration by Snyder.

Carlsbadcrawl.com immediately began filling up with comments of searchers logging their eggs. Some participants have been visiting the village specifically for this event since the inaugural carlsbadcrawl.com hunt in 2008 and others stumbled upon the hunt for the first time. “We decided to go on a walk this morning not knowing about this little hunt,” Brooke Lopez wrote in a comment. “We had a blast trying to find the eggs and hope to do this again!”

Carlsbad locals and visitors were invited to participate in both the project kick off craft party and the Easter morning egg hunt through a wave of flyers, word of mouth and a campaign of creative marketing online promotions. This event is entirely sponsored by Snyder Art and Design and is “planted” in the streets as a way to encourage the development of an artistic local culture, promote local business and give back to the local village community.

4th Annual Plant an Egg Craft Night

Carlsbadcrawl.com kicked off its 4th annual community project called PROJECT: Plant an Egg 2011 with a community plastic egg decorating gathering organized by Bryan Snyder of Snyder Art and hosted by Crafticality on April 20, 2011.

The night consisted of craft, food, LIVE music by Jon Ji and over 50 egg crafters, many which have been coming from the beginning.

“This event began in Bryan’s living room with 8 close friends crafting around his coffee table,” Amanda Solie of Carlsbad said. “Now look what is has grown to!”

Many new faces also joined the creative gathering including a family visiting friends from San Francisco and another family who recently moved to the area. “We just moved to Oceanside from Santee,” one family said. “We wish Oside did this.”

Jon Ji provided the music while his girlfriend backed him up on lap snare and crafters took breaks in between decorating eggs to enjoy a warm slice of pizza. A wide assortment of craft was available through out the night.

This event began as a small gathering of close friends. In only 4 years, it has evolved into a large community craft gathering of new and old faces, live music, food and friendship!

Thank you everyone for making this another amazing event!

Keep your eyes open Easter Sunday morning!

a ‘CARLSBORE’ no more

Flowers are blooming, the sun’s appearance is more frequent and the ocean water is warming. Things are looking good and the spirits of village locals are high… or are they?

During the nights of the second weekend in April the Carlsbad Village became a message board for the mind, or minds, of individuals with dark and gloomy thoughts. A wave of fairly clever, yet depressing, sayings were “tagged” in black, red and blue spray paint on a variety of high profile walls leaving the local community confused.

Though there is a similar theme in these sayings, maybe it is not about the message, but about the act and the rebellion. The simple defacing of property void of any artistic relevance may suffice in their minds and agenda.

As seen in the aggressive vandalism of Sãn Paulo, Brazil called Pixação, vandals cover every inch of the city with ancient European calligraphy which is undecipherable scribble to the untrained eye. The Pixação is so thick and the pixadores are so aggressive that the city realizes they are no match against the 30 year tradition of Pixação.

There are no factions within Pixação. Territory is not claimed by individuals or independent groups within the pixadores. They are one; they are the forgotten, underprivileged youth of Sãn Paulo whose options other than Pixação are limited to a soccer field, a bar and a crack house. Without Pixação, they are lost and forgotten. Pixação gives the recognition, recreation and and protest. Pixação is their voice.

Are the individuals who scribbled on the walls of our Carlsbad Village seeking what the Pixação’s seek? Could these scribbles be an attempt at recognition? Are they choosing the act of scribbling because the the local community lacks appropriate recreation facilities and are they using this medium as protest?

The streets of Sãn Paulo remain covered in undecipherable banter while the scribble in the Carlsbad Village has probably already been cleaned. These two communities have different cultures and are 6,048 miles apart, but one commonality that remains loud is the subversive voice in the streets.

What do you think of these scribbles?

Del Mar Nationals: Hot Rods and Customs

The Del Mar Fairgrounds revved with excitement as the 11th Hot Rod and Custom Car show rolled into town for a 3 day celebration and competition on the April 1-3, 2011.

A thick crowd of spectators marveled as over 2,000 immaculately polished cars and trucks through ’72 radiated under the Summer-like sun. Cold beer splashed and nachos crunched. Cameras poked and prodded under hoods and into trunks. Runaway bolts tumbled into dark shadows and a greasy wrench in the back pocket of oil stained blue jeans was as normal as a iphone in the hand of a big city hipster.

The awards were distributed, though it was impossible to find one automobile you did not dream of rebuilding and driving. The chosen revved and rolled down the catwalk lined with a crowd of whistles and camera flashes.

Whether the owner of one of the magnificent wheeled masterpieces or a spectator with dreams of trading in his reliable pickup for a 1957 Buick Caballero Wagon, it was all smiles. The occasional splash into the numerous oil puddles was as jolly as walk during the season’s first rain storm and the low sagging cloud of car exhaust, which would normally choke you like the smoke of a cigarette, tickled your nose with the scent of a fine cigar.

Where Art Meets the Ocean: The Cardiff Kook

The Magic Carpet Ride, or better know as the Cardiff Kook, looms 16ft above the crowded public walkway along highway 101 in the beach side community of Cardiff by the Sea. Originally the sculpture was to showcase the community’s love for surfing, but that love grew into harsh criticism immediately after the unveiling.

The bronze statue has been the subject of a wave of pranks disclosing public distaste for the awkward and unnatural stance of the surfer. The most notable pranks have included dressing up the statue as cupid, a SDSU basketball player, a shark attack victim and, most recently, Vincent Van Gogh in celebration of Vincent’s March 30th birthday.

Matthew Antichevich, the artist of “the Kook” realizes that the public response is far from desirable. At this point he might prefer to take it down, but with a price tag of $120,000, the immediate removal is most likely not an option, as witnessed with the long Carlsbad Bars fiasco.

The most impacting and successful pieces of art are the ones that provoke reaction and emotion in the viewers. These pieces promote public dialogue and encourage the creative process. They connect minds and open a collective forum for discussion. The “Cardiff Kook” sculpture has done all these. Reactions from Cardiff locals and visitors have prompted smiles, invited conversation, stimulated local business and helped develop friendships.

As seen in the numerous pranks, the sculpture has successfully promoted the creative process by offering a canvas for local artists. It has inspired personal expression and showcased the positive impact of public installation. The small community of Cardiff by the Sea is a perfect example of art connecting minds and nourishing culture. Where art meets the Ocean… the Cardiff Kook muses.

I would like to thank Antichevich for not only offering his skill to public space, but also for providing a canvas for a healthy and ongoing community art collaboration. A hearty handshake to the beautiful Cardiff community and locals for all the memories and friendships of the past days. You have a gem and I look forward to future visits. -Bryan Snyder

The Village adds ‘Experience’ to its Resume

click on all photos to enlarge

The Carlsbad Village sidewalks remained densely cluttered and animated with smiles throughout the duration of the Thursdays on the Coast: The Experience on the evening of March 24th.

After a short hiatus, the monthly art walk returned with experience gained from the introduction of the event last year. New faces, an updated name and some restructuring raised the level of anticipation in weeks leading up to the event’s reemergence.

According to Ofie Escobedo, Carlsbad resident and part owner of Lola’s Market and Deli, the event delivered. “The Village is hopping,” she said as she experienced the event. “Everyone should come out and enjoy this.”

A popular destination of this month’s art walk was HomeLife Village Realtors and Art Gallery who, like many other participating businesses, invited guests to browse the art that hung from their walls, enjoy complimentary snacks and wine and listen to the sounds of live music.

Ricky Small from El Cajon played music at the corner of Grand and State with one of his band mates Keli Ross-Ma’u from the Oceanside based band Ricky Small and the Talls. “It’s fun to plop down and play music on the sidewalk,” Ricky explains. “Anyone who listens is cool in my book.”

Those who experienced the event wandered with map in hand on a self-guided tour of the village. Some participating businesses included The Foundry Studios at New Village Arts Theatre (where Andrea Team exhibit an impressive body of work titled Art in Metaphor), Lynn Forbes School of Sculpture, Branci Caldo Pomordo, Carlsbad Village Theatre and the newest addition called the 10 Hour Gallery exhibit featuring 37 artists. “I’m buying other artist’s work because it is so good,” Rita Shulak, an artist included in the 10 Hour Gallery said.

From the smiles and cheerful conversations, community supporters, art enthusiasts and live music fans enjoyed their experience in the village. With the improving weather and Summer just around the corner, Thursdays on the Coast are looking mighty good.
