The Beach Front Fantasy

Imagine waking up in bed in front of a giant clear window overlooking the ocean. Your downstairs art and music studio also has the similar view. The rumbling of waves soothes between melodies and a glance of a passing sea bird sends your paint brush on a sporadic smear. The scent of the ocean tumbles through open windows and mixes with the aroma of a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

Some live this fantasy. Some only imagine… and others improvise.

Jefferson Lights by Bryan Snyder

Jefferson Lights by Bryan Snyder

I set up a camera just off the dip on Jefferson in the Carlsbad Village. Through a long exposure setting, I captured each car approach and enter the often surprising declivity followed by the thrashing sound of metal on asphalt . After an hour, and dozens of passing cars, I packed up the camera and headed to the computer where I superimposed each trail of light over the motionless background.

If the Streets Could Vote…

Businesses announce new merchandise and hot sales through facade draped banners and tarps flap behind overhead airplanes announcing the newest Summertime crave. Artists paste subversive icons under the moonlight and giant billboards loom above congested freeways.

The streets have become a stage for all forms of information, expression, and during election season, political opinion.

Where in Carlsbad have you seen political opinion stated?

2013 Village Calendar Sponsorship Opp.

For the past 5 years Snyder Art and Design and www.carlsbadcrawl.com have teamed up and produced a local calendar. Each year consists of 13 unique and creative photos highlighting the Carlsbad Village through an artistic eye.

The goal of the calendar is to promote local business, encourage the development of an artistic culture and to inspire a creative way observing the local streets.

Each year I donate my time to photographing, designing and organizing this community based calendar. To finance the calendar, I ask interested local businesses for sponsorship.

The calendar is 100% financed by local business sponsorships and will be available this month. 500 calendars will be printed and will be available for FREE.

Date Night: Chucky and His Bride do Carlsbad

Ear piercing shrieks, puddles of blood and dismembered body parts littered the usually quiet and sleepy village streets this year as Chucky and his Bride ran wild during another Halloween in the Carlsbad Village.

Chucky’s weapon of choice, a freshly sharpened kitchen knife was passed from his cold blood stained hands to his bride in between each murderous encounter while photos of each victim were snapped and archived.

Hulk’s muscles went limp and Toto’s bark went mute as Dorthy’s heels clicked their last click. An At&T worker was shocked by the sharp prick of the blade and an Indian fell early. Even Captain America toppled upon Chucky and his bride’s pile of Halloween casualties.

At the end of their rampage and after dozens of ruthless murders, Chucky and his Bride were apprehended, but like the end of every horror movie… a sequel creeps near.

Installing the Halloween Spirit on Jefferson

The Carlsbad Village might not have the artistic attraction of the Cardiff Kook and our sleepy streets were never gifted a giant mosaic of the Surfing Madonna, but we do have an ongoing installation on the North side of the village that has been quietly attracting attention for many years.

They are motionless and quiet, yet they attract the eyes of every passing car and pedestrian on the highly busy Jefferson Street near Las Flores. You pick the holiday and these mannequins will serve up a creative, and often riskee, outfit.

Not all are excited about the installations, but to date, the mannequins have not to be hassled with.

Street Art in Costa Rica by SNYDER

Much like I have done for the past 10 years, I planned to arrive in a foreign country with a bag loaded with artwork and art supplies. Each piece of art was created in advance to gift to the urban environment of my future destination. The art supplies would be used in a similar fashion where the creation would be left behind for locals and travelers to interact with.

Jaco and Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica was my destination, but complications arose well before landing. One checked-in bag loaded with spray cans was confiscated at LAX. I was summoned to security by the airport loud speaker. I was told the cans and paste could not be taken. I shrugged my shoulders and boarded the plane with an adjusted itinerary upon landing… find paint and paste.

The warm water and consistent surf lured me into the ocean for the first days of the trip but an injury to my leg and stitches kept me out of all water for the remaining day which meant it was time to start painting.

I began with introducing the the city of Jaco with my drip technique. I found a nice red concrete pillar outside an art store where I would later load up on paints and brushes. A screaming J. Leigh piece was chosen and pasted to surprise the hundreds of daily passersby.

I have pasted Same ‘Ol, a Carlsbad local homeless man who passed away a handful of years ago, all over the world including China, Australia, Europ and all over the US. I couldn’t pass on bringing him to Central America. I found a nice weathered wall outside a bank. While pasting it, a voice shouted at me. I continued pasting while answering to the American voice. I soon found out the young man behind the voice was from Oceanside, the neighboring city of my hometown and home to Same ‘Ol when he was not in Carlsbad.

I returned to Playa Hermosa and a few days later and began spraying a large Doodle in the rain titled ‘Doodle’s Broken Board’ on the facade of the Cabinas Las Olas Hotel, which has pounding surf just out back notorious for breaking boards. Locals and visitors watched as I completed the piece and the hotel owners later asked if I would be interested in working with them on a t shirt showcasing Doodle.

With some pastes, a mural and countless stickers and small pencil Doodles scattered all along my path, I began a Doodle surprise in the ocean themed bathroom of my hotel room. After a long day of wandering around the streets of Jaco, I began sketching a Doodle character on the wall besides the sink and behind the door. The sketch came pretty easy and before I new it I had transformed the entire bathroom in a working studio. I painted late into the night and continued the following morning.

My stay at the hotel had come to an end. After thanking everyone for their hospitality, I motioned up towards my room at the 2nd floor and hinted about a “little” surprise.

Random Acts of Kindness : Andrea LaHue

Whether a scribble on a wall or an elaborate composition of color, shapes and text, visual creativity put in public places without permission has been considered vandalism since the early inception of graffiti dating back decades. Today, artists of all ages have continued to use the urban environment, but the face-covering identity-hiding mystic of a vandal is quickly fading.

The artwork of Andrea LaHue, also known as LA street artist Random Act, can be found all over Los Angeles. Her unsanctioned hand painted flowers reach skyward on the facades of old and rundown buildings adding something of a friendly nod to an otherwise dismal LA commute.

Not only does LaHue disclose her identity, she paints during the middle of the day. She does not consider her artwork vandalism or an attempt to monopolize the view of LA commuters with repetitive iconography, but as visual gifts with a positive purpose.

Where vandals create a relationship with the streets on more of a subversive personal level, LaHue and other community conscious artists go beyond the traditional two way relationship and introduce a third, just as important participant- the community.

On September 29th, LaHue implemented a community and culture building project into the West Hollywood streets by inviting friends, strangers and street art enthusiasts out to paint a giant mural on Spaulding and Melrose titled ‘Love Letters’. Crowds quickly emerged from the local streets ready to grab a can supplied by LaHue. The wall was transformed into a colorful masterpiece composed of community thought and imagery.

This three way relationship between the artist, the street and the community is one of a handful of factors ripping off the bandana of the fading Exit Through the Photoshop street art scene and directly introducing a new evolution of street art which aims to improve and strengthen community, promote local business and encourage the development of culture.

Snyder Doodles the Hurley Pro: Trestles

The ASP World Championship Tour crashed onto the Southern California coast this week under a cloudless sky for the Hurley Pro at Lower’s Trestles. The world’s best professional surfers hacked into and flew above 3-4 ft. waves as the highly engaged crowd cheered, enjoyed Acai Bowls, listened to rambles by surf commentator Dave Stansfield, got an up close look of some of the best surfers in the world and was surprised by a slew of hidden Snyder Art.

Bryan Snyder, Carlsbad based artist, chose the contest grounds for his most recent Doodle hunt. Nearly 30 blocks of wood with Doodle reproductions from his 2012 body of work were hidden for contest guests to find. Once spotted, finders were encouraged to take them home for free.

Snyder Doodles were hidden in the morning of Sunday to celebrate the opening day of competition. Excited contest guests found Doodles hanging on contest fences, poking out of bushes and amongst merchandise. Each one was found and excitedly taken home.

Along with hiding Doodles, Snyder spent the day experiencing the contest.

“I absorbed everything,” Snyder explains. “I spent more than 7 hours watching a bit of each heat, visiting sponsor booths, watching media and snapping photos. I’ve watched every contest either online or in person for the past 5 years. The evolution of these events over the years are amazing. Everything from technology, webcasts, broadcasting, prize money and sponsor support has all drastically increased in the past years. It’s truly an amazing culture that continues to thicken and improve!”

Snyder has been putting art in public spaces for nearly 10 years. He introduced his character Doodle 2 years ago and has developed many community based Doodle art hunts in Carlsbad and Encinitas.
