Happy Birthday Jim

Those who see and think of things with the intent to create have molded their thought process through a lifetime of curiosity and a desire to seek information. The motivation to explore your thoughts comes from many sources; some obvious like a teacher and others just as important but less direct.

The waves were rolling inches form my sandy toes as I sat on my brightly colored towel while my mother, deep in thought, sat motionless. The beach was empty as the sun approached the pink and orange horizon. My shivers slowly bounced up my legs and into my jaw where my teeth began to chatter like a drunk skeleton. The breeze picked up and momentarily awoke my mother from her thoughts as the pages of her book began to violently turn. Her deep fascination was thwarted, but soon engulfed her again as she flipped back through the blown stories. I stared at her as she sat undeterred in her bikini, warmed by the content of the black book which she cradled so lovingly. My body ached with the cold, but soon was heated by curiosity. I softly nudged her warm arm. She folded the corner of the page and listened to the interest in my soft spoken words as I questioned her ability to stay so warm during the last minutes of the day’s light. Her stare soothed my bloodshot eyes as she opened to a previously bookmarked page in the black hard copy book. She read a section about a leather pants wearing man who spoke like doves flew and had a mind that ignited flames with each thought. She continued reading select passages, each motivating more than the last. Like a worn key opening a virgin door, these words unlocked a new set of ideas, a new path and a new way of thinking.

Creativity found me on that cold day through the extreme interest of my mother and my fascination with the capability of a book, powerful words and a well documented life of a creative icon.

Happy Birthday Jim and thanks for the inspiration.
