Remembering Same ‘Ol

Friday, August 27th, 2010

I first met Don “Same ‘Ol” Hocza in the back of Rite Aid, formally known as Thrifty’s, in the early 90s. I was a young skateboarding kid who used the village streets as my training ground. At this time skateboarding became illegal in the Carlsbad village and the local group of skateboarders filminstantly became rebels, outcasts and viewed by some as a plague contaminating the carefully manicured streets of the village.

At this time Same ‘Ol and I began frequenting the same spots. He used these locations to drink and live without hassle and I used them to continue skateboarding while avoiding citation. He used ledges to sleep on and I used them to grind. There was a homeless group that also frequented the same alleys, back side of grocery stores and empty parking lots, but Same ‘Ol always stood out. His scruffy beard whipped in the wind and round belly jiggled upon 40467_1607528350665_1309883774_31641910_6456501_nhis rickety bike. A plastic bag of cans dripped along the asphalt and a wide smile greeted all.

Same ‘Ol and I soon developed a friendship and with each story and conversation, I realized the close ties between society’s view of the homeless and their view of the local skateboarders. The homeless and I felt the same way, forced into feeling sub human when all we wanted was to continue the lifestyle we had chosen. I wanted to skateboard without possible citation and Same ‘Ol wanted to continue living simply.

Same ‘Ol did continue living simply. He was void of all stresses and responsibilities, lived on the beach and was loved by many. I began to skateboard less over the years, but I think about the common ground we once shared every time I pick up a board.

ocean villas carlsbad

sail boatAs a visitor to coastal Carlsbad, you will have the dilemma of choosing one of the many outstanding vacation rentals to call your temporary home. Chances are you will want to stay on the beach with barbecue pits, large balconies and breathtaking ocean views. Most rentals offer these amenities, but few offer the visual treat that the Ocean Villas of Carlsbad boasts on the walls of their rooms, hallways and outside stucco.

woody 2A floral explosion of color welcomes as you enter the Ocean Villas property. Birds of Paradise are smeared across a light blue sky while other floral designs introduce the tranquility of a mellow week to come. Sandy community beach toys pile in a corner in front of another impressive mural of a parked woody upon a tropical beach. Picturesque waves peel in the background while green leaves and muralflowers stretch to the adjacent wall and onto another beach themed mural of a pounding set and sun bathing pelicans.

As you enter the villa hallways, you can almost feel the sand between your toes and the fresh burn from a mid day nap on the beach. Framed paintings hint at paradise-to-be as chairsyou descend the sandy stairs to your room. Green palms sway on these bright canvases and waves are captured in mid peel. The ocean has yet to be seen through your room windows, but you already feel as if you have experienced a week of beach side sunsets.

Carlsbad’s First Art Show Created by YOU!!!

on cardsA black curtain draped over the front window of Snyder’s studio as eager artists and community enthusiasts chatted and checked their watches along Carlsbad’s UpState section of the village. A line formed in front of the locked door well before 6pm and a paint splattered phone buzzed with excited messages and encouragement. Wide smiles and sideinspired eyes met the face of an artist whom had dreamed of this moment for months as the door of Snyder Art and Design swung open for Carlsbad’s First Art Show Created by YOU!!!

shelbyThe night’s artists quickly circled the center art supply table while 37 blank canvases hung from the surrounding white walls. Paint soon smeared, pastels scraped, magazines tore and crayons colored to the beat of unrestricted creativity. Like a weed laden forest, each canvas sprouted with wild creativity. Jon Ji animated the studio with his cowboy bebop and gypsy crawl while paint splattered hands periodically traded in the brushes for a spontaneous tambourine solo. The late Spring breeze whipped the scent of Turpentine. The clickity clack of urethane wheels signaled another fresh delivery and cheers tumbledjon robin boy draw sidewalkdown the streets as Michael presented another fresh order from Paradise Pizza in Carlsbad.a and jeff classic

outsideThe outside sidewalk was transformed into a giant community canvas where the local kids scraped chalk the color of an Easter morning basket. A feathered friend greeted visitors and a ground level light enhanced the colorful sidewalk saturations. Limited edition prints, hand screened t shirts and CDs piled high atop a table and a community bulletin board rattled amongst the roars of Cantina bound street hogs.

off wall2The night’s goal was to emphasize the creative process while eliminating the stress of a final piece. Each canvas evolved throughout the duration of the night and a final piece sat high atop an endless staircase. Friends chatted ideas and strangers shared canvases. Paint dripped down white walls and burrowed into surprisingly clean carpet. Multiple video videocameras hummed and sporadic interviews sprouted. Permanent marker doodles were encouraged on the bathroom walls and the creative photos by Leetal Elmaleh captured the night’s shenanigans.

snyder art frontCarlsbad’s First Art Show Created by YOU!!! was a result of discussions with friends, the desire to encourage the creative process and a wholeheartedly attempt to express appreciation for all the support and encouragement that has received during the past 3 years. Snyder Art and Design has rambled a slew of paintings documenting local iconography and influences, implemented a variety of community connecting projects and highlighted the great members that make up our amazing village by the sea. This event was a gift back to the village community as a way to express my gratitude and appreciation….

Beauty is… by Jefferson Elementary

Jefferson Elementary School Art Show

Art is created by two different types of artists. One type creates to share their feelings, the deep emotions that define who they are and how they think. Their art comes from the heart. Others create art strictly for the sale. They paint not from experience or passion, but to lay down colors and shapes which will have the highest chance of selling. Their favorite piece is whichever one sells first and a successful art show is judged by the thickness of their wallet. A true artist creates from the heart and is driven by a passion to create, not sell.

Young children who have not yet experienced greed, jealousy and competition are the best artists. Their work is not tampered with these interruptions. All work should be created for the family refrigerator and the price of each piece of work should be a smile.

Jefferson Elementary School in Carlsbad recently had their annual Beauty is… art show. The walls of the auditorium were scattered with amazing creations. Though we were asked to judge the art and pick pieces to advance to next stage, the art was far from being tainted by competition. Each piece was painted or illustrated free of the “rights and wrongs” of creating art for sale. The work was free and more natural. This show was by far one of our favorites of the year!

True art comes from the love of creating. True artist create for the love of their passions.
